From the late 19th century through to the mid 20th century, the Royal British Navy utilized diving helmets in rescue and salvage operations.
Civilian hardhat diver, William Walker maybe the most famous, as he is known as the man who saved Winchester Cathedral. In 1079 its foundation was unknowingly placed on a layer of peat.
Over the years the cathedral began to sink. The peat was discovered and the only means to save the cathedral was to remove the peat and replace it with concrete.
William Walker spent the next 6 years under the cathedral and thanks to him Winchester Cathedral is still standing, where a statue honors his effort to this day.
